Master of Research

Overview

The Master of Research (MRes) is a two-year full-time higher degree by research program designed for graduates who want to develop advanced research skills and pursue independent scholarly investigation in their chosen discipline.

This program prepares students for doctoral studies (PhD) or research-oriented careers in academia, industry, and government.

The course combines advanced research training, supervised independent study, and a major thesis project, enabling students to contribute new knowledge to their field of expertise.

Course Structure

The program consists of two main components:

  1. Research Training Coursework – foundational studies in research design, literature review, data management, and ethics.

  2. Thesis Component – an independent, supervised research project resulting in a written thesis that demonstrates original contribution to knowledge.

Students work closely with a supervisor approved by CIHE and are supported by progress milestones throughout the research process (proposal, literature review, data collection, analysis, and final thesis submission).

Admission Requirements

Academic:

  • A Bachelor’s Honours degree, or a Master’s degree in a relevant field; or

  • A Bachelor’s degree (AQF Level 7) with significant research experience or completion of the Graduate Certificate in Research Methods.

English Language:

  • IELTS 6.5 overall (no band below 6.0), or

  • PTE Academic 58 (no communicative skill below 50), or equivalent.

Additional Requirements:

  • A detailed research proposal (approx. 1,000–1,500 words) outlining the intended topic, aims, methodology, and potential contribution.

  • Approval from the CIHE Research Committee and a suitable academic supervisor.

Learning Approach

The program emphasizes independent research under expert supervision.

Students participate in seminars, workshops, and training sessions designed to enhance their academic writing, data analysis, and presentation skills.

Regular milestone reviews ensure consistent progress and academic support.

Assessment is based primarily on the submission and examination of the final thesis, along with seminar participation and interim research reports.

Graduate Outcomes

Graduates of the Master of Research will be able to:
